Email marketing message length

1135 words – that’s how long the email was.

That’s 4 pages of text (I know because I copied and pasted the email into Word to find out).

And the first link didn’t show up until around page three.

It’s tough trying to get your message across succinctly. Even with the popularity of twitter that forces you into 140 character constraints we still have a tough time getting to the point.

Which makes me guess that you’re asking, "So what’s the perfect email marketing message length then?"

The Goldilocks Effect aka The Rule of 3

We seem to be powerless when it comes down to the Goldilocks Effect otherwise known as the Rule of Three .

In the early '80's Joel Huber and Christopher Puto did a little experiment at Duke University involving students and beer.

• In the first experiment, they offered just two varieties: a bargain beer (at $1.80) or a slightly better premium beer (at $2.60). Two-thirds of their students went for the premium.

• In the second experiment, they added an inferior, super-discount beer at $1.60. Nobody selected this cheapo option. But the bargain beer, now the middle of three choices, saw its share rise from 33 percent to 47 percent.

• Finally, the researchers took away the super-bargain and added a super-premium option at $3.40. Suddenly, it was the premium beer that was the middle of three options, and guess what? Its popularity share rose from 66 percent to 90 percent.

These findings were so impressive that Netflix is even testing this approach to their pricing: Good, better and best.

So what does this have to do with Email Marketing? Continue Reading

Email Engagement Factors

I was surprised to see the message in my spam folder.

I had signed up to their newsletter about 3 months ago. And sure I hadn't opened up an email from them in a little while. But I WANT to get their messages.

Looking through my spam folder I found even more of their messages there.

They were a legitimate sender. I had gone through the double opt-in process to get on their list - but still the high tech wizardry that runs my inbox was deeming their messages as spam.

Why?

The reason is a serious one. Something that I don't see many people talking about. It's something that is happening silently behind the scenes. A new thing that the big dogs like Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail are doing now. Something so subtle that most businesses don’t even notice that it's happening.

But it is – and it's impacting your business whether you know it or not.

So what's going on? And what can you do as a savvy email marketer to make some course corrections? Tweaks to ensure you're not blindsided by these quiet and mysterious changes?

First let's talk about what’s going on…

I recently signed up to The Gap's newsletter to see how they're handling their email marketing.

I "Officially" opted into their list on Friday September 13th.

Things started off well but as we moved into the next week a different type of picture emerged.

By the time Friday the 20th hit (one week later) I was already burnt out from the amount of messages they had sent me.

Here's a look at my inbox...

The Gap's Email Marketing Strategy is Jamming Up my inbox

They started off strong. Welcoming me to their mailing list. The email looked good (you can see it below). They gave me a discount for becoming a subscriber and I could use it right away. I even liked their "Free Shipping" callout in the top right corner of their message.

I was pleasantly surprised. Things were off to a good start.

But that quickly changed to dread and overwhelm...

How to get your emails opened

The nice people over at Sikich have been kind enough to put together a snazzy infographic sharing 10 easy ways to boost your email open rates.

10 Easy Ways to Boost Your Email Open Rates

1) Use a clean list of TARGETED, opted-in recipients (a person who is willing to go through the double-opt-in process is probably pretty interested in hearing wat you have to say)

2) Send from a REAL PERSON that recipients can reply to (nothing is more impersonal than seeing donotreply@oursuperawesomebiz.com in the from field of a newsletter)

3) Write a killer SUBJECT LINE (64% of people say they open an email because of the subject line)

I’ve never met kids like my own. They’re weird. They love school. Even before they could go to school they were stoked about the idea of it.

And as the sun starts to set on their summer vacation they’re revved up once again to go back to class.

Which got me to thinking about teachers. And all the prep and planning that they do in order to teach a class for a year. Which really is no different than everything that goes into having a successful email marketing program for your business.

As marketers there’s a bunch of things we can learn from these unsung heroes.

Which is what inspired us to create the Email Marketing Assessment Workbook.

Understanding Canada's AntiSpam Legislation

We were at an event last week and everyone was asking us about Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) and what it means for business.

So we wanted to take a moment to get you up to speed and put your mind at ease when it comes to email marketing in Canada.

Anyone who’s been doing email marketing for a little while will be familiar with the Double Opt-In process. Some people call it “permission based marketing” the idea of which was made popular by the ever insightful Seth Godin in his free ebook “Permission Marketing” which you can still grab here http://www.sethgodin.com/permission/.

The Double Opt-In process is where you get confirmed permission from an individual to send them email messages from an Email Marketing Service like MyBizMailer.

It’s an added (and often unwanted) step during the signup process. One that truly confirms that the person who’s signing up to your newsletter actually wants to hear from you. This not only helps to keep your email marketing reputation in good standing it also provides you with a higher quality list. Which helps to keep your spam score low (even if there’s some hidden influence that effect your spam score that don’t really get talked about much).
